Emme Wears
Emme Wears Handcrafted Foraged Glass All Seeing Eye Necklace
Crafted by hand the design element of the eye came about through a period of quiet reflection and research - realising and noticing a recurring theme. This prominent feature depicted in her favourite sailors tattoo, to collecting clay-pipes and displaying them in a glass jar; noticing eyes looking back. To photographing favourite pebbles with hidden faces and seeing eyes appears in water. Like finding a message in a bottle the universe was revealing itself in eye form.
About The Collection - Salt of The Earth
‘This is a coming of age collection, offering moments of grounding and nourishment to feed your soul on the earth brown glass and salt white milk glass.
Within each bead there is beauty to be found, seen, felt and touched. Each is bought to me as salt crusted glass on the River Bed, before being handworked into a treasured tactile adornment.
The motifs embodied in this collection include wandering lines which speak of the shoreline and new found paths. The all seeing eye lifted from salvaged claypipes and sailors tattoos welcomes moments of reflection and encouragement to look beyond. The hourglass symbol allows the wearer to consider lost and found time, and the connection between time and place.
Let your beads become a companion that enriches you, connecting you to the salt of the river and sand of the earth. Bridging the liminal space between material and embodiment. A gift from both the Earth and the Sea.’
About the Artist
Emily’s life is a story of two halves. Graduating from UWE in 2004 with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, she began her career in mental health across Devon and Cornwall, developing a fascination with how we translate our internal worlds for ourselves and others - a fascination that continues to shape her work today.
Craving a more creative and connected life after becoming a single parent at the head of a neurodivergent household, Emily turned to craft, folklore and mudlarking. Living by happenstance on an old Victorian bottle dump where the River Exe meets the sea, daily walks filled her pockets with tidal discoveries: salt-crusted Bovril and Marmite jars, apothecary bottles, milk glass, broken pottery, clay pipes and the forgotten traces of Victorian life. Her magpie mind found stories in these fragments, in the patterns pressed into glass and ceramic, and in the folklore woven through the Exe’s banks.
Drawn to making with her hands as a way to quieten the noise of her internal dialogue, Emily became captivated by the possibility of creating something precious from almost nothing. She founded Emme Wears to transform the river’s discarded gifts into reimagined glass beads rich with symbolism, storytelling and folklore.
Each necklace is designed to be handled as much as worn. The subtle variations in shape and texture encourage touch and reflection, becoming familiar beneath the fingertips. Through this ritual of making and wearing, the discarded becomes treasured, and found materials are remade into keepsakes that speak of transformation, grounding and the beauty of imperfection.
